Falcons Elude Fishermen

After a hard fought goalless first half that saw a Falcon booked for a late tackle on captain Anthony LaRocca the Gloucester High School Fishermen surrendered two goals early in the second half that proved to be the difference in the match between NEC rivals.

Gloucester pulled to within one when senior captain Chris Peritore picked himself up after being fouled in the penalty area before slotting home the resulting penalty kick. However, Danvers put the result beyond doubt with a late goal against the run of play.

Fishermen goalkeeper Chase Kelly kept Gloucester in the game with several diving stops in the first half. Things were made more difficult for the Fishermen, already missing senior midfielder Ben Hannah, when central defender Anthony LaRocca had to leave the game. Despite strong play from the players, including Connor Olson, who deputized for LaRocca, Danvers was able to keep its unblemished record in the NEC (5-0 in NEC, 5-2 overall).
The 3-1 loss at Deering Stadium in Danvers drops Gloucester's record to 2-2-1.

Fishermen over the Big Blue

The Gloucester boys responded to Monday's defeat with two goal victory over the Swampscott Big Blue Wednesday night.

Chris Peritore earned his second goal of the season in the first half with Ben Hannah notching his second assist of the young season. After losing their way for much of the rest of the first half the Fishermen increased the tempo toward the end of the first 40-minutes and were able to maintain their goal advantage into the halftime break.

In the second half Swampscott sought to by-pass the midfield with more direct play but the fishermen back four were up to the challenge. Christian Favalora's one on one play, Sean Dixon's decisive goal line clearance, and the mopping up of Ignacio Farjas and Anthony LaRocca helped Chase Kelly preserve the shut out.

As the second half wore on Gloucester saw more of the ball in the attacking third and forced the Swampscott keeper into several saves before Chris Peritore, doing yeoman's work defensively, stole a ball and found the back of the net to tally a brace for the day and three for the year.

The Fishermen now have two days of training before facing the NEC Small leading Danvers Falcons on Saturday at 6:30pm at Deering Stadium.

Gloucester (1-0-1) over Saugus 2-0

A penalty kick save by Chase Kelly ensured an early Kyle Hurd goal would stand up until Ben Hannah could double the advantage in the second half.

Hurd's goal came in the eighth minute on a powerful right wing solo run capped by a decisive finish. Hannah's goal, a left-footed drive, was assisted by Kevin Hurd who received a pass from Marcos Rodrigues, who refused to go down despite several Sachem tackles.

Aaron Horne found the back of the net late in the match but the referee adjudged Horne to have been in an offside position.

Strong performances by the Fishermen back four, including Isaac Sperry getting his first start of the young season, helped Kelly preserve the shutout.

Earlier in the day the Fishermen JV (0-1-1) fell to the Sachem JV 4-3.

Fishermen Draw with Magicians

The Gloucester High School boys' soccer varsity tied Marblehead 2-2 yesterday afternoon. Marblehead took an early lead before the Fishermen answered with a goal by captain Chris Peritore on a long range pass from captain Anthony LaRocca.

In the second half Gloucester took the lead after excellent build up play by Kyle Hurd and Ben Hannah led well-struck goal by Kevin Hurd. Marblehead equalized on a scrum in front of the Gloucester goal after one of several corner kicks earned by the Magicians.

Both teams had several additional opportunities but neither capitalized with Gloucester enjoying the better opportunities from the run of play and Marblehead looking likely on re-starts and long passes from the back.

Gloucester will look to get back on track hosting Saugus on Friday night at 6:30.
